Stakeholder engagement for fossil-free food value chain

A broad collaborative project for a fossil-free food value chain is now beginning. Some 30 actors representing the entire food chain and a large number of authorities are initiating cross-sectoral cooperation. This type of joint effort will have a very large impact on moving the system in a new direction.

The goal is to jointly develop and test new compensation and business collaboration models that can lead to better cost and risk sharing between actors to accelerate the transition to fossil-free.
There is great interest in linking different initiatives for fossil freedom and focusing on business opportunities and building competitiveness through transition and business collaboration between food actors.

From dialogue to implementation
Several needs assessments have been carried out for different parts of the chain, and there are currently several cross-sectoral commitments on fossil freedom. What is missing is a forum for testing and modelling solutions for the implementation of commitments.

– Now is the time to lower the thresholds for implementing measures and get more action in this area. There will be room to test new forms of collaboration and identify the prerequisite measures required and thus the role that authorities can play in supporting the fossil-free transition,” says Marie Persson, from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth’s coordination assignment for the food strategy.

In this project, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth coordinates stakeholder collaboration through the coordination assignment for the food strategy. Mistra Food Future’s research programme and work package 8 (WP8), run by RISE, is the process management partner in the implementation. The work is expected to last until September 2024.

– Through WP8, Mistra Food Futures has previously focused on stakeholder dialogue on new business models for the transformation of the food system and now wants to use fossil freedom as a case. Together we now take the next step with a special focus on cross-sectoral collaborations for new compensation and business collaboration models that can ensure a fossil-free food value chain, says Maria Hellström, leader of WP8.
